The Nissan Murano is a standout among mid-size crossover SUVs. In a sea awash with chunky, boxy-looking competitors, the Murano slips pass with its elegant styling and luxurious looks. There are no other offerings from the competition that come even close to matching the head-turning Nissan personal transporter.

Trim Levels & Packages of 2016 Nissan Murano

Buyers have four trim levels to choose from: the base S, well-equipped SV, premium SL, and the ultra-lux Platinum. Front-wheel drive is standard: all-wheel drive is available. Finally, there is a large selection of option packages and standalone upgrades to choose from. For 2016, a USB port is now standard across the lineup. Also, the Bose audio system in the Premium package now comes with 11 speakers instead of 9.

The 2016 Nissan Murano continues to be powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. It's mated to a continuously variable transmission with the entire setup producing 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is an excellent 21 mpg in city driving, 28 mpg along the highway and 24 mpg in combined driving.* Interestingly, this is with either with front- or all-wheel drive. The Murano has a tow capacity up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Outstanding Features of the 2016 Nissan Murano

The standard equipment for the Murano is long even in the base S. Creature comforts include a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and column, cloth upholstery, automated headlamps and dual-zone climate control. All come standard. Notable electronics include Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera and audio system with six speakers.

Safety Technologies of the 2016 Nissan Murano

Last year's Murano received four out of five stars in overall safety. The crossover also received a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, the non-profit's highest rating. This is unsurprising given all models come with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control system, hill-start assist, plenty of airbags and the above mentioned rearview camera. More advanced safety technologies like blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems, a frontal-collision warning and mitigation system, and a top-view 360-degree camera system can be had on select trim levels.

Special Features of the 2016 Nissan Murano

Power and heated front row seats, foglamps, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and column setup, remote engine start and larger wheels are just a few of the features found on higher trim levels. Buyers then have the Technology Package, Premium Package and Navigation Package to further customize their Murano.

"If style plays a part in your life, if you're not a shrinking wallflower, the Nissan Murano may be in your future," writes KBB on the appeal of the crossover. "You will look a long time to find a more distinctively styled SUV."
