Whether we like to face up to it or not, the days of vehicles powered entirely by gas or diesel are limited. Although the common point of view is that we will eventually go all-electric, it's not something that was ever going to happen overnight. There simply isn't the infrastructure to support an entire nation of electric vehicles, so we're going to have to gradually wean ourselves off fossil fuels over a long period. That means Hybrid technology, and we're now seeing more and more manufacturers embracing it.Â
To start with, the majority of Hybrid gas/electric models were cars. However, in the last few years the car market has shrunk significantly as more and more buyers turn to SUVs and pickup trucks. It's seems to have taken a while for manufacturers to catch up with the public's thirst for all things SUV and come up with a decent choice of Hybrid variants, and some brands still have a lot of work to do in this area.
As ever, Nissan isn't lagging in any way and its incredibly popular Rogue SUV is now available as the
2019 Nissan Rogue Hybrid. Some rivals have gone down the route of introducing completely new Hybrid SUV nameplates, but Nissan has chosen what seems to be a much more obvious and sensible route of putting a Hybrid powertrain into what is already one of its most popular models with the Nissan Rogue Hybrid.
How does it compare to the regular Rogue?
A lot of buyers who haven't yet driven a Hybrid expect them to feel very different to a regular gas-powered vehicle, which is probably understandable. The fact is that in most cases that simply isn't true, and that's certainly case here with the Rogue. The standard powerplant in most Rogue's found on lots is a 2.5-liter inline-four developing 170 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque. Under the hood of the Rogue Hybrid is a 2.0-liter inline-four paired with a 30-kW electric motor to deliver a combined 176 horsepower.
As far as the driving experience is concerned, it's hard to tell the difference between the Hybrid and the gas-powered version of the Rogue. The steering, ride and handling is exactly the same, but the immediacy of the torque delivery from the electric motor of the Hybrid when accelerating at low speeds could give the game away a little. There is no requirement to adjust the way you drive in any way at all as the Hybrid drives just like any other Rogue and even uses the same CVT transmission as gas-only versions.
Fuel economy
Of course, the big reason most buyers will choose a Hybrid right now is to save money on fuel, and the Nissan Rogue Hybrid doesn't disappoint in this all-important area. The most fuel-efficient two-wheel drive versions of the standard Rogue are rated by the EPA at 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg combined. If buyers choose the extra capability of all-wheel drive those numbers reduce slightly to 25/32/29 mpg. Two-wheel drive versions of the Hybrid deliver an impressive 33 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg combined, and all-wheel drive versions offer 31/34/33 mpg.*
